Adorned

Adorned

This past winter I was invited on a trip to the desert where we had a serendipitous moment. The sandstone in the area was adorned with a whitish-blue coating—like someone had brushed on blue sidewalk chalk throughout the region. The striking, at times subtle, contrasts of the blues paired with the red rock were incredible to behold in person and a pure joy to explore visually with my camera. In that moment I knew it would be impossible for one photograph to encapsulate what I experienced, so the thought of a series emerged.

Afterward, my fellow travel companions and I were scouring the internet for answers as to the cause of this phenomenon. Our initial assumption was that rainwater from earlier in the week leeched salt and other minerals out of the red rock as it dried up. While researching the occurrence, a local expert also posed the theory it could be algae on the rocks. Regardless, it was a beautiful sight to behold.

I hope you enjoy my collection from my desert experience.
